Aggressive systemic mastocytosis (ASM) is an advanced phase of mastocytosis. This is a disease in which the body produces excessive amounts of a particular type of white blood cell named a mast cell. Signs and symptoms of disease are related to mast cells infiltrating organs and/or mast cells releasing substances into the surrounding tissue. The symptoms of ASM may include fatigue, weight loss, diarrhea, edema (increase in fluid retention, often in the abdominal area), skin rashes, itching, enlargement of organs such as liver or spleen, bone fractures, anemia (decreases in red blood cell count), and thrombocytopenia (decreases in platelets, which are cells that help clot the blood to stop bleeding).
Novartis Oncology is conducting clinical research to determine if the study drug midostaurin is safe and effective in people who have either aggressive systemic mastocytosis (ASM) or mast cell leukemia (MCL). Midostaurin is a medicine which has not been approved by any Health Authority for the treatment of people. The medicine being tested in this study is currently not “on the market” (available for you to buy) in any country. It is experimental and therefore available only in clinical trials.
