RAD001 is the research name/code for a new investigational
medication made by Novartis. The active ingredient in RAD001 is everolimus,
which is available in different dosage strengths under the trade name Certican®
for the prevention of organ rejection in heart and kidney transplant recipients.
Certican was first approved in the Europe in 2003. Certican is not approved in
the US.
At this time, RAD001 is only available to cancer patients in clinical studies
such as Pillar-1. RAD001 is also being studied as a treatment for patients with
various cancers, either alone or in combination with other cancer treatments.
Experiments have shown that RAD001 may stop certain cancer cells from
multiplying. RAD001 may also block the formation of the blood vessels that a
tumor needs to grow and spread.
