Type 2 Diabetes - Are You in Control?

Are you or a loved one among the millions of people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes?  Then you may be interested in learning more about type 2 diabetes research happening at Novartis.

When you have type 2 diabetes, the body does not respond correctly to insulin. This is called insulin resistance. Insulin resistance means that fat, liver, and muscle cells do not respond normally to insulin. As a result, blood sugar does not get into cells to be stored for energy. When sugar cannot enter cells, abnormally high levels of sugar build up in the blood. This is called hyperglycemia. High levels of blood sugar often trigger the pancreas to produce more and more insulin, but it is  not enough to keep up with the body's demand.(1)

Diabetes can lead to serious complications, such as blindness, kidney damage, cardiovascular disease, nervous system disease, lower-limb amputations, and many other conditions, when not treated properly.(2)

Developing new medicines to treat diabetes is a long and complex process, but an essential one in finding new and innovative treatments.  In our quest to find new treatments, Novartis will be conducting several clinical trials for patients diagnosed with diabetes.
