Participation Advantages
Participation in a clinical study such as SIG-NET will offer
you a chance to receive investigational therapy specifically for your
illness. However, you must be aware that it is possible you will not benefit
from this treatment.
What is the time commitment for patients in this
study?
The total duration of the study
treatment will be 6 months. All patients will have safety follow-up visits after
they have received their last injection. What should I
expect while taking SOM230?
Your doctors and
nurses will monitor you closely while you are in this study. You will be asked
to call your patient diary (interactive voice response system) each day and
return to your doctor’s office regularly so he or she can see how you’re doing
and record your progress. If necessary, you are free to withdraw from the study
or be withdrawn by your doctor at any time.
The most frequently reported
side effects are stomach related, most commonly diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal
pain. As with any medication, side effects vary from person to person. Many
symptoms go away shortly after SOM230 is stopped but in some cases they may be
serious and/or long-lasting. Remember to report any symptoms to your doctor or
nurse.
How is the treatment
administered?
All injections of long-acting
release (LAR) study drug will be given by an independent study nurse. Patients
may be asked to self-administer the study drug via subcutaneous (s.c.)
injections as prescribed by the site staff or investigator.
How will I know if the treatment is
working?
Throughout the study period you
will be involved in numerous evaluations. Your doctor will assess your progress
every step of the way through various examinations and testing. He or she will
keep you informed of your status. Feel free to ask your doctor any questions you
may have.
Who will pay for the study?
Novartis will pay for all study-specific assessments.
